The administration has submitted a request for parliamentary approval to confirm the appointments of two former cabinet ministers, Thoriq Ibrahim and Adam Shareef Umar, as international ambassadors, according to official correspondence dispatched to the legislature.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu noted in the communication that the administration has resolved to appoint Thoriq to represent the Maldives in the United Arab Emirates. Thoriq’s transition to the foreign service follows an extensive tenure in the current administration, where he executed the duties of the minister of climate change, environment and energy, as well as the minister of environment and tourism.
President Muizzu has forwarded the nomination of Adam Shareef to serve as the nation’s envoy to Qatar in a concurrent diplomatic maneuver. Adam Shareef brings substantial domestic administrative experience to his new posting, having operated within the current administration as the minister of cities, local government and public works.
The shift toward international diplomacy for both officials originates from a deliberate executive reorganisation. Thoriq and Adam Shareef tendered their resignations from their respective ministerial positions to grant the president the necessary flexibility to implement desired structural changes to the cabinet. Following their departure from these cabinet-level posts, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointed both individuals to the diplomatic rank of ambassador-at-large.
