New prison unit opens in Hulhumale’

A new prison unit (Unit 6) has been opened at Hulhumale’ on the site of the former COVID facility.

The two-storey unit will serve as the sixth unit of the Hulhumale’ Prison and is intended to address the prison’s capacity constraints. The unit includes holding cells for inmates serving sentences are assigned technical work in the Male’ area.

According to Hulhumale’ Prison Director, DSP Ahmed Jaadhullah, the government is giving special priority to increasing prison capacity following the closure of the Male’ Prison. He said the new unit will consist of five cells in total, out of which one has been completed and is now operational. While the completed cells house 16 prisoners, 140 additional spaces will be available upon completion of all five cells by the end of September.

The unit includes bunk beds, air conditioning, fans, a mess room, prayer room, and laundry facilities. The project is being developed with the assistance of prisoners and correctional staff.

Over the past two years, around 400 additional spaces have been added to the prison system as part of efforts to expand capacity.
