Addu power project: Generator manufacturing under way, says Fenaka chief

The manufacturing of generator sets for a new Central Power Station in Addu City is currently underway, Mohamed Afeef Hussain, the managing director of Fenaka Corporation Limited, said in an interview with PSM News. The power station represents a critical government initiative designed to provide a permanent resolution to the chronic electricity shortages plaguing the city. Efforts to deliver a lasting remedy for Addu City’s power challenges are actively progressing, Afeef affirmed.

The execution of the project is being managed by Definite Solutions, a Dubai-based firm with extensive infrastructure experience in West Asia, which was awarded the contract on 7 March. The contractor has provided comprehensive assurances that the project will be finished by the end of July next year, adhering strictly to the established timeline, while administrative preparations are already in motion.

The facility is slated to be equipped with modern, low-speed engines supplied by Belgium’s Anglo-Belgian Corporation, representing a significant technological shift from the high-speed models currently utilised in the city. The fabrication of these specialised units is actively advancing. "Diligent efforts are underway to advance the project without interruption. The manufacturing of these engines [generator sets] is currently progressing at the factory," Afeef affirmed.

The comprehensive scope encompasses the construction of a powerhouse, installing five 5.2-megawatt low-speed generators, establishing a fuel farm, and providing bunkering services to supply power to the grid.

"Upon my personal inspection, I observed that the personnel are operating under highly challenging conditions,” Afeef stated. “The persistent threat of sudden power outages remains a constant concern. Because the government places an utmost priority on resolving these issues, I assure you that we will expedite this project and bring it to a swift completion."

To ensure operational readiness, personnel from Belgium will provide on-the-ground training to the Fenaka Corporation team. By the time these low-speed generators arrive, are installed, and undergo commissioning, the workforce will be fully trained and prepared to manage the enhanced service, representatives from the corporation indicated.
