Surveys and studies have officially commenced for the project to modernise the roads of Male' and Villimale', marking a significant step forward in the government's infrastructure development agenda.
The comprehensive initiative, which aims to transform the capital city's road infrastructure, is being implemented through grant aid provided by the Government of China.
The road modernisation project stands as a special priority for the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who has emphasised urban infrastructure improvement as central to his government's vision for the nation. According to official statements, while the project was initially planned to be financed through the government's own budgetary allocations, the opportunity for the grant assistance from the Chinese government emerged during the President's official visit to China.
In October of last year, the government formalised its commitment to the project by signing a letter of exchange with the Chinese government, thereby initiating the design phase of the initiative. As part of the implementation structure, Chinese agencies have been entrusted with the responsibility of managing project arrangements and overseeing the hiring process for contractors who will execute the construction and development works.
Technical teams have already deployed to the field to begin the essential surveying and research work necessary to prepare detailed engineering drawings and project specifications. The ongoing surveys encompass comprehensive assessments of the current infrastructure conditions across the targeted areas, with fieldwork and stakeholder consultations scheduled to continue until 4 June.
Beyond merely improving road surfaces, the project adopts a holistic approach to urban infrastructure development. The modernisation effort will include substantial upgrades to water supply and sewerage systems, electrical infrastructure, stormwater drainage networks, and fire hydrants throughout the project areas.
