The Maldives has been elected to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the term 2027–2029, during elections held at the UN Headquarters in New York.
This is the first time that the Maldives has been elected to ECOSOC since the country joined the UN in 1965.
The Maldives obtained 183 votes in the election, securing one of the three Asia-Pacific seats alongside Malaysia and the Republic of Korea. The three-year term of the Maldives membership will commence on 1 January 2027.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the election of the Maldives to ECOSOC reflects the confidence placed by Member States in the longstanding commitment of the Maldives to issues such as sustainable development, climate action and financing for development.
In a post shared on his official X account, the President described the achievement as a proud and historic milestone for the nation, noting that the election reflects the trust and confidence the international community places in the Maldives and its commitment to constructive multilateral engagement.
The President emphasised that, as a Small Island Developing State, the Maldives understands first-hand the urgent challenges faced by vulnerable nations, including climate change, economic resilience and sustainable development. He stated that the seat on ECOSOC provides a stronger platform from which to advocate for the priorities and aspirations of Small Island Developing States and developing countries around the world.
The President further affirmed that the Maldives will work closely with its partners to strengthen international cooperation, accelerate progress towards sustainable development, and contribute to a fairer and more resilient multilateral system.
Commenting on the achievement, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam said the election of the Maldives to ECOSOC for the first time is a proud and historic moment for the country. Noting that it reflects the international community’s confidence and trust in the Maldives, and the foreign policy of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, she described it as a recognition of the long-standing commitment of the Maldives to sustainable development, climate action, and its advocacy on the priorities of small island developing States. She expressed appreciation to all Member States for their support and confidence in the Maldives.
The Permanent Representative of Maldives to the United Nations Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed also stated that the election of the Maldives is both an honour and a responsibility.
“It is an acknowledgement of the consistent advocacy of the Maldives for sustainable development and climate resilience. During our term, we will work with all Member States to strengthen ECOSOC’s role as a platform for implementation, partnership, and practical solutions,” he said.
The ECOSOC is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations. It coordinates the work of the United Nations system on economic, social and related issues. ECOSOC also plays a key role in reviewing progress on the implementation of internationally agreed development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
