The Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed has visited Thakandhoo, Haa Alif Atoll, to inspect ongoing heritage conservation projects.
The visit focused on inspecting the progress of ongoing projects on protecting and preserving historical monuments in Utheemu, Thakandhoo, and Baarah in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitments, and reviewing preparations for the upcoming National Day celebrations.
Key sites inspected during the visit included the Utheemu Alikilegefaanu shrine, the island’s coral stone cemetery, and the ongoing renovation of the Vevu, antique coral stone bathing tanks. She also visited the island’s mangroves.
The Minister also inspected projects in Uthime, including the Boduthakurufaanu Dhoraashi, renovation of Kandhuvalu Mosque, and the development of the ‘Wahaka Vau’ area as well as the ‘Vaahaka Veu’ development site. She stated that these projects will be completed and opened before National Day.
The government’s heritage policy aims to preserve ancient buildings while maintaining their original character.
