The Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare has signed an agreement with Sri Lanka’s Suwasena Hospital to train Maldivian medical graduates.
The agreement was signed by State Minister Khadeeja Abdul Samad Abdulla on behalf of the Maldivian Health Ministry and Suwasena Hospital’s Director Bandula Egodage on behalf of the hospital.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Health Minister Geela Ali said the agreement will make clinical trainings more accessible, and provide a useful opportunity for Maldivian medical graduates to gain clinical training, practical experience, and enhance their skills.
Hospital Director Bandula Egodage said the hospital is a renowned institution in the region and provides excellent services. Suwasena Hospital will provide modern medical training using state-of-the-art equipment, he said, adding that the agreement is beneficial to both countries.
The agreement aims to strengthen the Maldives’ healthcare workforce by helping medical graduates develop specialised clinical skills and competencies through a clinical internship programme. The agreement is also intended to strengthen bilateral cooperation and longstanding relations between the Maldives and Sri Lanka.
The programme will provide one year of clinical internship training for Maldivian MBBS graduates. A total of 20 graduates will be trained each year under the agreement.
