President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the government’s biggest project is relocating Male' Commercial Harbour to the industrial island of Thilafushi.
Speaking on 'The Pulse' podcast series, President Muizzu said the Thilafushi port project is the government’s highest-priority project and would provide the biggest boost to the Maldivian economy.
“If we wish, all the relevant parties are working together and the work is progressing very strongly. The government’s aim is to open the facility on November 11 next year,” President Muizzu said.
The relocation of Male' Commercial Harbour to Thilafushi is described by the government as one of President Muizzu’s most important economic pledges. The government has also said the project will provide a permanent solution to the space constraints currently facing the port.
The port being developed in Thilafushi is planned as a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility designed to meet international standards and adapt to modern developments. The project is a key step towards establishing a comprehensive logistics system capable of providing uninterrupted services around the clock.
The port will include a modern container terminal and multi-purpose terminals. It will also feature cold-storage facilities for perishable goods, as well as bonded warehouses.
