Housing Ministry on Friday expressed satisfaction over the quality of the 17-kilometre link road developed in Laamu Atoll. A team of experts from the Ministry conducted a survey to evaluate the quality of the link road ahead of its official inauguration. Development of the road was completed in August.
The Housing Ministry said it was satisfied with the quality of the road, describing the new road as “the road currently developed to the highest of standards in the country.”
Deputy Housing Minister Abdulla Muthalib said that “the Chinese-contractor had done an excellent job.” More work needs be done before the road can be officially inaugurated,” he added.
The road was developed as a highway, and lacks speed breakers, so the Ministry is now preparing to install speed breakers to stop speeding and ensure safety of commuters.
Muthalib further said that “landscaping works of the road have been contracted to a private party.” He added that “the Government expects to officially inaugurate the Laamu Atoll Link Road before the end of the year.”
The Housing Ministry said it is also preparing to hold colorful celebrations in Laamu Atoll to open the new road. The project is the biggest infrastructure project in Laamu Atoll, which would pave way for further development, it said.
Atoll Council President Yusuf Amir earlier said that “it is a top priority to draw up a guideline on the use of the road.”
The MVR30 million project was funded through grant aid from the Chinese government.
