Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali said that providing information through digital means in ways that engage young people is important.
The minister made the remarks in an interview with PSM News after opening the Pulse – 'Abaadheege Vindhu': 2045 exhibition.
She said the exhibition, which presents population-related information through modern means, is expected to be an engaging experience for young people. She also encouraged as many people as possible to visit the exhibition, which provides an opportunity for a wide range of people to express their views.
The Pulse Exhibition digitally presents information on the Maldives’ trajectory towards 2045, taking into account demographic and social changes expected in the coming years. The minister said young people’s interest in learning about national issues and expressing their views on them must be increased. She added that greater youth participation in these areas can be achieved by sharing information in ways that are relevant and accessible to young people.
“This will be a very popular exhibition among young people. It is also important for young people to make use of digital platforms like this,” Minister Geela said.
The minister noted that the Maldives, as a country made up of separate islands, faces the challenge of identifying emerging demographic and other trends and preparing for them. She said it is important to recognise the progress the country has made so far when considering the future.
According to the minister, demographic changes in a small island nation such as the Maldives are about more than statistics. They are closely linked to ensuring fairness, opportunities and a good quality of life for people across all generations.
“The structure of the Maldivian population is currently undergoing major changes. We are therefore compelled to rethink how support can be provided to the population,” Minister Geela said.
She said the exhibition serves as a call to action to begin working towards addressing these issues in practical ways.
