The China-Maldives Friendship Bridge, which opened eight years ago, stands as a powerful symbol of friendly relations between the Maldives and China, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said. Marking the eighth anniversary of the official opening and operation of the Sinamalé Bridge, President Muizzu observed the milestone during an on-site inspection on Sunday.
Representing one of the largest infrastructure undertakings in the country's history, the marine link connects the capital island of Malé with the airport island of Hulhulé and the suburban development of Hulhumalé. Although domestic scepticism questioned whether a crossing could span the open sea, the project was completed ahead of schedule.
Upon his arrival at the site, the president was received by Dr Abdulla Muththalib, the Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development; Iruthisham Adam, the Minister of Foreign Affairs; and Kong Xianhua, the Chinese Ambassador to the Maldives. President Muizzu viewed a park exhibition of archival photographs before conducting a formal inspection.
“Eight years ago today, the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge was opened as a powerful symbol of the enduring friendship between our two nations, connecting our Capital, Malè to the Airport and Hulhumalé,” President Muizzu wrote on social media. “More than infrastructure, it represents the trust, solidarity and shared aspirations that bind the Maldives and China together.” He maintained that bilateral cooperation under Chinese President Xi Jinping would continue expanding opportunities for both nations.
The Sinamalé Bridge was officially opened on 30 August 2018, during President Muizzu’s previous service as the housing minister. The 1.38-kilometre structure spans 20.3 metres in width, providing two lanes for four-wheeled vehicles and two dedicated lanes for motorcycles. Capital expenditure reached USD 300 million, financed through a USD 100 million Chinese grant, a USD 170 million loan, and a USD 30 million Maldivian state allocation.
