Work is actively underway to establish 58 new branches of the National Centre for the Holy Quran across the Maldives, Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony of the 38th National Quran Recitation Competition—graced by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef—Minister Shaheem said that expanding Quranic education infrastructure fulfills the vision of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
With branches already operational in 30 islands, construction and development are progressing across 50 additional locations, and the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments has requested funding for another 30 sites in the upcoming national budget, he added.
The announcement coincided with the launch of the nation's premier Quran competition, which has undergone major structural reforms this year. For the first time, institutional barriers have been removed, allowing any interested child or citizen to apply and compete directly. Out of 3,050 initial applicants, 2,742 participated in regional auditions, narrowing down to 379 semi-finalists.
The renewed competition format, now funded directly through the state budget to offer the highest monetary prizes in the country, features international judges on its panels and spans seven age groups.
Semi-finals are scheduled for 11 to 14 September. with the finals following on 16 to 17 September culminating in the presentation of the prestigious President’s Special Award.
