Diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Malaysia were established 58 years ago, in September 1968. Following the establishment of formal diplomatic relations, the Maldives’ foreign affairs were largely conducted through the Malaysian High Commission in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Malaysia’s first Ambassador accredited to the Maldives was Tengku Indra Petra, who at the time was Malaysia’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka and India and a member of the country’s royal family.
Deepening ties over the years
The relationship established in 1968 continued to grow, leading to the establishment of the High Commission of the Maldives in Kuala Lumpur in 2006. The Maldives’ first Ambassador to Malaysia was Mohamed Hilmy, who served the government for many years.
The longstanding relationship between the Maldives and Malaysia is not based solely on financial assistance. Rather, it is an important partnership closely linked to the social and economic development of both countries. Leaders from both nations have made official visits, while the work carried out during these visits has brought benefits to both countries across a range of areas.
A close and enduring friendship
The diplomatic relationship between Malaysia and the Maldives has fostered a strong bond of friendship between the leaders and peoples of both countries. Dr Mahathir Mohamad, regarded as one of the architects of Malaysia’s development and the country’s longest-serving former Prime Minister, continues to maintain close ties with the Maldives.
During the first term of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, Dr Mahathir made an official visit to the Maldives as Prime Minister. Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak also maintained close relations with the Maldives and visited the country while serving as Prime Minister.
As successive Malaysian leaders have maintained close ties with the Maldives, every administration in the Maldives has likewise maintained strong relations with Malaysia. Today, the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu continues to nurture close ties with Malaysia.
Working together on the international stage
The political relationship between Malaysia and the Maldives has resulted in important agreements and joint initiatives, while the two countries also continue to work closely on the international stage.
As Muslim-majority countries, Malaysia and the Maldives are important members of the Commonwealth and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), while also working together in a number of other international organisations.
Through regular consultations between their leaders, the two countries have adopted common positions on major international issues. Both have consistently advocated for the rights of the Palestinian people and voiced opposition to Israeli policies, while also pursuing common positions on a range of other major international issues.
Malaysia and the Maldives, both located in the Indian Ocean, are vulnerable to the impacts of environmental changes. As a result, the two countries consistently advocate at international forums for the rights of small island states and for the protection of the oceans.
Expanding ties through development and culture
Important agreements have been concluded and substantial work has been carried out as part of the political relationship between the two countries, with positive results now evident across a range of sectors.
The Maldives and Malaysia have also become countries whose voices carry weight on the international stage. Both nations are making progress in urban and economic development, creating opportunities for further advancement.
Both countries are also pursuing significant reforms and developments in governance and public administration.
The political relationship that began 58 years ago with the establishment of formal diplomatic ties has today evolved into a strategic and strong partnership built on cooperation in development, education, religion, healthcare, security, defence and economic relations.
As the two countries look towards the future, there is little doubt that the existing relationship will continue to deepen, while new areas of cooperation will emerge and create fresh opportunities for development and progress in both the Maldives and Malaysia.
