First Lady says 900 years as a 100 percent muslim nation is a unique honour

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has said that spending 900 years as an Islamic nation is a source of pride and honour that no other country in the world has experienced.

In a special message to commemorate the day that Maldives embraced Islam, the first lady stated that Maldives accomplished its 100 percent muslim nation title this through unity and togetherness.

In her message the first lady thanked Allah (SWT) for this accomplishment. She also prayed that Maldives would continue to hold on to their love and practice of the religion.

Islam was brought to the Maldives in 548 AH (1153 AD). Following the conversion of the Maldivian king to Islam, the entire country embraced the religion. The first Maldivian king to accept Islam was Sultan Mohamed Ibn Abdullah, known as Dhovemi Kalaminja.

According to the Maldives constitution, a Maldivian citizen must be a Muslim. Most of the laws in the constitution are based of the principles of the Islamic religion. The country celebrates the day it embraced Islam on the 2nd of Rabi al-Thani,
