The official symbol for the Maldivian Rufiyaa has been incorporated into the Unicode Standard to enable its standardised use across digital platforms, the central bank, Maldives Monetary Authority, announced on Wednesday.
Designated with code point U+20C2 in Version UNICODE 18.0 published by The Unicode Consortium, the symbol represents a currency graphic that the central bank has formally issued and utilised since 2022. Prior to this international standardisation, the currency symbol was rendered through varying designs and disparate formatting criteria across digital mediums.
Following its integration into the global standard, the MVR symbol can now be displayed under a unified benchmark across websites, mobile applications, and diverse digital platforms, the central bank noted. The monetary authority characterised the development as a major milestone toward facilitating the seamless adoption of the national currency symbol on digital tools, observing that full functional availability will take effect alongside upcoming system updates.
Expressing its appreciation, the central bank thanked all parties who contributed to the technical efforts required to secure the symbol’s placement within the Unicode Standard. The visual mark originated from a public design competition, in which it was selected by an official judging panel as the winning entry before its 2022 rollout and subsequent printing on physical MVR banknotes.
