World Ozone Day marked with environmental awareness activities

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy has marked World Ozone Day with a special event at the Artificial Beach in Male’.

The event was attended by the Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ali Shareef and ministry officials.

The event commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, under the theme “Global Action for a Cooler Planet”. The activities aimed to raise public awareness of ozone layer protection, global warming and energy efficiency.

Five stalls by the ministry’s Energy Department, the Utility Regulation Authority, the Maldives National University and the Five Million Tree Planting Programme, showcased environmental and energy initiatives at the event.

The tree-planting programme’s stall distributed saplings, while the university organised activities including environmental pledges, games and the distribution of plants.

The Utility Regulation Authority demonstrated the energy consumption of different types of lights and promoted energy-saving practices. It also held a Q&A session on energy awareness.

The ministry's energy stall provided information on energy efficiency, renewable energy, solar PV systems and the ‘Hakathari’ programme, alongside activities for children.

A lucky draw offered a 12,000 BTU energy-efficient air conditioner as the prize.
