The Ministry of Economic Development, Transport and Trade has introduced new measures to strengthen traffic management around schools and hospitals, prioritising enforcement against illegal parking in Malé and Hulhumalé.
Under the new arrangements, digital and electronic systems, alongside specialised applications, will enable authorities to take action against individuals who violate land transport laws and regulations.
The Ministry introduced the measures under Article 93 of the Land Transport Act. Enforcement authorities will begin using these systems to carry out their responsibilities seven days after the announcement.
The Ministry has also urged motorists to operate and use their vehicles in accordance with existing land transport laws and regulations.
As part of the enforcement process, the Maldives Police Service is responsible for notifying individuals of any action taken against them through SMS and email. To ensure they receive these notifications directly, the Ministry has instructed motorists to update their current telephone numbers and email addresses through the SIMS portal.
The Ministry has also identified priority roads and locations for the initial phase of enforcement against illegal parking in Malé and Hulhumalé.
These include areas surrounding hospitals and schools, busy junctions and parking spaces reserved for vehicles used by people requiring special assistance.
In Malé, enforcement will cover Majeedhee Magu, Ameenee Magu, Sosun Magu and Boduthakurufaanu Magu, also known as Ring Road.
In Hulhumalé Phase I, the measures will apply to Boashima Hingun, Saima Hingun, Nirolhu Magu, Handhuvaree Hingun, Hithigas Magu, Bageechaa Hingun and Reethigas Magu.
The Ministry has also identified Gul-Alaamaa Hin'gun, Nirolhu Magu, Berebedhimaa Hingun and Hithigas Magu in Hulhumalé Phase II for enforcement.
