Pakistan and Maldives: A 60-year partnership built on schools, medicine, and faith

Pakistan has extended multifaceted assistance to the Maldives since establishing diplomatic relations, anchoring six decades of bilateral support primarily within the educational and religious spheres.

Founded on shared Islamic identity, this partnership has consistently prioritised human resource development through targeted public-sector capacity-building programmes. Under the Pakistan Technical Assistance Programme, scholarships for general medicine and dentistry have made Pakistan a principal destination for Maldivian medical training and internships, producing a substantial portion of the island nation's practising doctors.

Domestically, a USD 5 million Pakistani grant inaugurated the Maldives’ first undergraduate medical degree programmes, enabling the Maldives National University to construct laboratories, acquire instructional equipment, and establish its School of Medicine. Bilateral discussions also encompass plans for a medical college and teaching hospital in Hulhumalé.

Educational cooperation extends to academic exchanges for Ministry of Education officials and donations of equipment, including laptops, alongside institutional support for the National Centre for the Holy Quran. Since the 1990s, institutions such as the International Islamic University Islamabad have educated a significant share of Maldivian religious scholars.

Pakistani adjudicators regularly preside over national Quranic competitions, complementing Islamabad's early direct contribution to constructing the landmark Masjid al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam, the Islamic Centre.
