President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has described a new chapter in Maldives-Pakistan relations following high-level talks in Islamabad, expressing confidence that closer cooperation will strengthen bilateral ties and deliver greater opportunities and benefits to both countries.

The President made the remarks during a joint press statement with Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif. He also thanked the Prime Minister, the Government and people of Pakistan for the warm hospitality extended to him, the First Lady and his delegation.

Reflecting on six decades of diplomatic relations, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the shared faith, friendship and mutual understanding underpinning bilateral ties. He noted that his visit, following a decade-long interval, offered an opportunity to build on their longstanding friendship.

"Today, Prime Minister Sharif and I have agreed to turn a new leaf, to build a new era of partnership on the foundations of our six decades of friendship," he stated.

The President highlighted the exchange of 20 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) covering health, education, fisheries, agriculture, youth, arts, Islamic affairs, tourism, information technology, policing and defence. He emphasised the importance of implementing the agreements to deliver practical benefits.

"Our next step, of course, is to translate these understandings into tangible opportunities and meaningful benefits for the people of both nations," he stated.

Turning to economic cooperation, President Dr Muizzu highlighted discussions on expanding trade, investment and connectivity. He welcomed ongoing discussions on establishing direct flights between the Maldives and Pakistan, citing opportunities for business and tourism, particularly halal and Muslim-friendly tourism.

He also highlighted the upcoming Maldives-Pakistan Business Forum, which will bring together investors, business leaders and innovators to explore mutually beneficial investments and partnerships.

The leaders further discussed expanding opportunities for young people through the Youth Exchange Programme, skills development, entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership, alongside training in artificial intelligence, digitalisation and emerging technologies.

In healthcare, discussions focused on increasing MBBS placements under the Pakistan Technical Assistance Programme and exploring internships in Pakistan for Maldivian medical graduates, alongside wider opportunities for students and healthcare professionals.

Addressing climate change, the President highlighted its implications for the Maldives' security, development and future. He welcomed cooperation with Pakistan in environmental conservation, sustainable waste management, renewable energy and climate resilience.

The leaders also discussed regional stability and closer international cooperation. President Dr Muizzu commended Pakistan's diplomatic efforts to promote dialogue, de-escalation, humanitarian assistance and a just and lasting peace amid the Middle East crisis.

Concluding his remarks, the President reaffirmed his confidence in the future of Maldives-Pakistan relations.

"I am convinced that the understandings we have reached will deepen our brotherly ties, open new avenues of cooperation, and elevate our partnership to even greater heights," he stated.
