EC to appeal court order delaying local council elections

The Elections Commission has decided to appeal against the Civil Court’s order to delay the local council elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Vice President of the Elections Commission, Amjad Musthafa said the commission’s legal team is now working to file an appeal.

He also revealed that despite the Civil Court’s order, the Commission is still going on with the preparations to hold the elections as scheduled.

The Civil Court on Thursday ordered the Elections Commission to push back the elections by 60 days.

The court ruling came following a petition filed by the ruling Maldives Progressive Party (PPM), citing that the party’s recent leadership dispute had hindered its efforts to prepare for the elections set for January 14.

The ruling said sitting councillors can remain in office beyond until the elections of new councillors.
