Minister of Environment and Energy opens bid for interested parties to establish water facilities in 14 islands by installing desalination systems and public water taps.
The islands include, Nellaidhoo, Makunudhoo, Kumundhoo, Vaikaradhoo, Nolhivaram of Haa Dhaalu Atoll, Holhudhoo and Maafaru of Noonu Atoll, Maakurathu and Inguraidhoo of Raa Atoll, Kendhoo of Baa Atoll, Gaafaru of Kaafu Atoll and Gan of Laamu Atoll. The population of these 14 islands roughly adds up to 20,000.
Under this project the government aims establish RO plants and water storage units. The projects are designed based on the population of the island and that the aim is to initiate these projects by the end of this year, the ministry said. This Project is administered by Environment Ministry and financed through funds allocated by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
