Maldives sends donations to help residents in Syria

Maldives has sent donations collected through "International Aid Campaign" to help residents in Syria.

International Aid Campaign is organized by a group of local NGO's to assist Muslims suffering due to conflicts around the world. The first round of the campaign will go towards helping Syrians affected by the country's ongoing civil war. The help Syria phase of the International Aid campaign was kicked off in January.

The NGOs worked together to collect aid for residents of Syria, which included clothing, essentials and food. Under this effort, aid is being delivered in three phases. Two consignments of aid collected for Syrians in need have now been delivered, according to organizers.

Media Coordinator of the International Aid Campaign, Adam Naaif said that the latest consignment includes 2 containers which consisted of 1,300 fish cans, mattresses, cloths, footwear. He said most of these donations are made by locals. Naaif added that items they send are those mentioned by international organizations as the most essential items required by Syrians.

The donations are sent to Syria through collaboration with an international humanitarian organization of Turkey. Government authorities and companies are providing assistance during the campaign, which garnered much support from public as well.

The six years civil war in Syria has left more than 300,000 people dead, devastated the country and drawn in global powers. In 2016, the United Nations (UN) identified 13.5 million Syrians requiring humanitarian assistance, of which more than 6 million are internally displaced within Syria, and over 4.8 million are refugees outside of Syria.
