President states government prioritises strengthening economy

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has stated that the main aim of the administration is to conduct economic activities and that the top priority of the administration is to strengthen the Maldivian economy. The President made the statement while speaking at the function held to inaugurate the Dhaalu Airport in Kudahuvadhoo Island, as part of his current visit to the atoll. The Dhaalu Airport was developed with a runway of 1800 metres. A land area of 62 hectares was reclaimed for the airport development project.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the President stated that every economic activity should be directly beneficial to the public. He also appealed to the island’s residents for the support and cooperation to the administration, in developmental undertakings.

Speaking in this regard, the President emphasised on the administration’s aim of creating more job opportunities for Maldivians. The President highlighted that the current statistics show that 70 thousand jobs have already been created within the private and public sectors, out of the 94 thousand jobs pledged for this 5 years term.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President stated that despite the incentives and advantages of the fisheries sector, tourism sector has become more popular among Maldivian youth. He also pointed out that tourism was the main contributor to the country’s economic development. He further said that the administration focuses on providing job opportunities in the remote areas of Maldives as well, so that the residents were not required to travel far from home for employment.

In his speech, President Yameen also shed light on the developmental projects to be carried out in Kudahuvadhoo Island by the current administration.
