Every year, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is observed on December 3, to promote an understanding of issues related to the demographic and mobilise support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of persons with disabilities.
This year, the theme for the day is “Transformation Towards a Sustainable and Resilient Society for All”.
In her address to the nation, Minister of Gender and Family Zeneysha Shaheed Zaki stated that it is high time to treat persons with disabilities as equals. In this regard, the Gender Minister highlighted the efforts of the administration of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. She said the government has been working towards improving economic prospects for persons with disabilities.
On this note, the minister shed light on job opportunities provided by the government for persons with disabilities. A total of 250 job opportunities have been reserved for PwDs in the administration of President Yameen.
The Gender Minister assured that the administration would remain committed to providing a better and steady life for persons with disabilities.
In addition, the Minister revealed that all schools of Maldives would have teachers trained and specialized to teach students with disabilities, by the beginning of the next academic year.
Minister Zeneysha called on PwDs to learn from international figures who have achieved successes despite their disabilities. She concluded her address by calling the society to stop all abuses and grievance made on people with disabilities.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities is an international observance promoted by the United Nations since 1992.
