Foreign Minister concludes visit to New York

Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohamed Asim has returned to the Maldives after concluding his 7-day visit to New York.

During his visit, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim attended the High Level Meeting on Peace Building and Sustaining Peace hosted by the President of the General Assembly, in New York from 24 - 25 April 2018. At the meeting, Minister Asim highlighted the changing nature of threats that are leading to instability impacting the peace and endangering security, in particular, the impacts of climate change on peace and security.

Minister Asim also took part in the Ministerial Segment of the ECOSOC Forum on Financing for Development, which was held in New York from 23-26 April 2018. At the Forum, Minister Asim also delivered a statement on behalf of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS).

Minister Asim, also spoke at the United Nations Security Council's open debate on "Youth, Peace and Security", where he underscored the important role of youth, and called for an inclusive approach in peace building and sustaining peace, which accommodates the concerns of the youth demographic.

During his stay in New York, Foreign Minister Asim also met with the Permanent Representatives of the League of Arab States, with a view to facilitate greater dialogue and cooperation with the countries of League.

Additionally, as part of the Maldives' campaign for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council for the 2019-2020, the Minister also met with several permanent representatives in New York and discussed bilateral relations and advocated for support towards Maldives' candidacy.

At the events attended by the Minister, he was accompanied by Maldives Permanent Representative Dr. Ali Naseer Mohamed and the officials of the Maldives Mission in New York. From the capital, the Minister was accompanied on the visit by Fathimath Najwa, Joint Secretary, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
