Minister of Legal Affairs at President's Office Aishath Azima Shakoor has reiterated the 13-year jail sentence of former President Mohamed Nasheed cannot be nullified by Supreme Court.
There are no legal means for former President Nasheed to run for the presidency in 2018 as he is currently serving a 13 year imprisonment, Legal Affairs Minister Aishath Azima said speaking on a programme aired on PSM News.
Citing the statement of United Nations Working Group urging that opportunity must be given to Mohamed Nasheed to run for the presidency, the Minister said it does not call to amend the legal rights bestowed to Nasheed. The Supreme Court does not have any legal means to nullify the ruling against Nasheed, according to the Legal Affairs Minister.
Noting the points mentioned in the order issued by Supreme Court on February 1 have been nullified, Minister Azima affirmed there is no place to debate about the order, adding there are no legal means for Nasheed to compete in the Presidential Election as a candidate. Highlighting the discussions exposed in the leaked audios are unacceptable, she said the government would not give the opportunity to establish a separate administration in Maldives.
