Ministry of Tourism has contracted Island Aviation Services Limited with the development of airport in Fainu of Raa Atoll. The contract was signed by the Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer and the Managing Director of Island Aviation Abdul Haris, at a ceremony held at Ministry of Tourism.
As part of the development of the airport, a city hotel and a medical centre will be established in the island, Tourism Minister Zameer revealed speaking to the press. Furthermore, an aircraft hangar and an aviation staff training centre will be developed as part of the project which would cost USD 7.9 million. The Minister revealed the projects will benefit the people of the atoll immensely.
The project will be conducted in three phases, with the airport runway and the passenger terminal to be developed in the first phase, Managing Director of Island Aviation Abdul Haris said speaking at the ceremony. Noting that a contractor for the project would be finalised within a month, he said the first phase of the project is expected to be completed within a year.
Moreover, Chairman of Universal Enterprises Mohamed Umar Manik stated it is crucial to increase the number of domestic airports to further expand the tourism sector of the country.
