Elections Commission of Maldives has revealed it will take action against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for holding an illegal presidential primary election.
President of Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef said MDP sent a letter to the commission stating the party will hold a presidential primary election within the limits of the laws and regulations. However, Ahmed Shareef with regret noted MDP held an illegal presidential primary against the guidelines followed in Maldives and against the letter sent by MDP to the commission. Therefore, he added the primary election held has no legal weight.
Highlighting legal action can be taken against MDP as mandated to the electoral body of the Maldives, the President of the commission stated a decision will be matter regarding the matter in a meeting scheduled for Sunday.
Disregarding the numerous notices of Elections Commission, MDP held the primary election with just one contestant, former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is banned from participating in any political activities due to the 13 year jail sentence he is currently serving.
