Elections Commission to file complaint against MDP leadership

Elections Commission of the Maldives has decided to file a complaint against Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) for holding an illegal presidential primary.
Member of the commission Ahmed Akram stated the commission is investigating the illegal presidential primary held by MDP seriously. It has been decided to lodge a complaint against MDP at Maldives Police Service, the commission member told the press.
Noting MDP was made aware on several occasions about the rules and regulations to follow in a presidential primary, Ahmed Akram said legal action must be taken against the party leadership for conducting deliberate illegal activities. Ahmed Akram assured the electoral body would not give any chance to establish a behaviour of illegal political activities in Maldives.
Disregarding the numerous notices of Elections Commission, MDP held the party's primary election with just one contestant, former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is prohibited from participating in any political activities as he is serving a 13-year jail sentence.
