Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has revealed discussions are underway with Regional Airports to expand the height of revetments in land reclaimed for the development of Kulhudhuffushi Airport.
MTCC are continuing discussions at a time when revetments put in place to protect the reclaimed area in the northern side of Kulhudhuffushi have been damaged due to unfavourable weather conditions.
Adding discussions are ongoing to heighten the revetments from 1.6 metres to 2.6 metres, General Manager of MTCC, Mohamed Husham noted increasing the height of revetments is important to eliminate any damages by bad weather. He highlighted the project of heightening the revetments will be carried simultaneously with airport development.
MTCC revealed about an area of 300 feet was damaged from the Kulhudhuffushi Airport development site. MTCC reclaimed an area of 15 hectares for the airport development project, which includes 6 hectares from the lagoon and 9 hectares from the mangrove area.
MTCC expects to complete the project to construct the runway, taxiway and apron at Kulhudhuffushi Airport by July of this year. The government has allocated a budget of almost USD 12 million for the project.
