Establishing a clean water and sewerage system in Fuvahmulah City is a dream of the residents. In 2016, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom began work on realising this dream. While work on establishing a clean water and sewerage system is ongoing, Ministry of Environment and Energy revealed the system will be completed by August.
The biggest water and sewerage project currently carried out in Maldives is the ongoing project in Fuvahmulah City. The mega project is contracted to a Sri Lankan-based Sierra Construction. Currently, work is underway to lay the pipes needed for establishment of the system.
Under the project, water meters will be placed in 2,959 households. Connecting the pipes to households are underway, revealed Ministry of Environment and Energy adding that laying pipes and concrete work will be completed by the June 20.
Moreover, the project will be completed by August with electricity works and installation of plants, according to Environment Ministry. The Ministry stated, 88% of the project has been completed. The project incorporates a pipe network which covers a distance of 91 kilometres, making it the second largest clean water system in the country. It is noteworthy that the biggest sewerage treatment facility in the country is also being established in Fuvahmulah under the project. The system installed will have the capacity of treating 2212 cubic metres of sewerage.
In efforts to provide safe drinking water to the population of the island, government is working on installing three water plants of 500 tonnes each, and laying water pipes covering 62 kilometres. Moreover, as part of the project, a renewable energy system will also be established.
For the project, Kuwait fund granted over USD 10.5 million as loan aid while state budget covers remaining USD 8.6 million for the project.
