MDP selects Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as presidential candidate

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has selected parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as the presidential candidate. The decision was made at the MDP congress held at Ukulhas of Alifu Alifu Atoll.
The resolution submitted by campaign manager for former President Mohamed Nasheed proposing to grant the candidacy to Mohamed Solih was passed unanimously with 791 votes. The resolution was proposed after granting the authority for the congress to elect a presidential candidate in a situation when the candidate elected by the primary presidential election is unable to contest.
The joint opposition coalition has decided to elect a running mate from Jumhooree Party after deciding to let MDP select the presidential candidate.
Elections Commission has announced the presidential election will be held on September 23.
