EU warned of sanctions against Maldives: President

President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom has revealed the European Union (EU) has warned to impose sanctions on Maldives.
Addressing the ceremony held at Dhiggaru in Meemu Atoll, President Abdulla Yameen went on to reveal that EU warned Maldives of sanctions for not freeing political leaders serving jail sentences. Noting the government will not change its stance despite several warnings targeted at the government, President Yameen affirmed there are certain rules and procedures to follow which will not be dissolved in the wake of such warnings. Certain rules and regulations are in place as they are crucial for the rule of law in Maldives, stated President.
Moreover, the president highlighted the government experienced chaos on several occasions due to the action of certain individuals, adding no international unions have the right to comment on internal matters as Maldivians must have the opportunity to make its own decisions. President Yameen assured to uphold Islam in the country, stating the EU has called to establish religious freedom in Maldives.
Furthermore, President reiterated that administration has not taken any action that contradicts the constitution, and that the administration has always worked on ensuring equality and justice for all. Addressing the public, the President called upon the people to take lessons from the country's past, and to put forth peace and development of our country. Moreover, shedding light on the health sector developmental projects intended for the future, President Yameen underscored that the health sector is one of the key areas of focus in his upcoming electoral manifesto.
Speaking further at the function, President Yameen deliberated on the social issues faced in the country, stating that this administration would not allow the youth population to go astray, and highlighted the important role Islamic education plays in creating an able youth population in the country.
Furthermore, President Yameen reiterated that his utmost priority was always the welfare of the people.
