In efforts to link the islands of Maldives with a proper transportation system, the government of Maldives took the initiative to conduct various development projects across the country in the past year.
Under the initiative, the development of an international airport in Maafaru of Noonu Atoll is in progress. The airport development project costs over USD 60 million and is funded by Abu Dhabi Fund for Development. While the runway of the airport is in its last stage of development, Minister of Tourism Moosa Zameer revealed the airport will be ready for domestic flights before the end of August.
Noonu Atoll is famous for its natural beauty and has seen the development of high class resorts over the years. In this regard, 6 resorts are currently in operation and the biggest challenge faced is not having a proper transportation system. However, the completion of the project will bring a solution for the challenge as private jets will be able to land at the airport.
The development of an international airport will provide numerous economic opportunities for the residents of the atoll. Moreover, as part of the project, a city hotel will also be developed in the island which will result in more employment opportunities and will further enhance the economy of the region.
Apart from Noonu Atoll, the government has initiated projects to develop airports in 7 other atolls.
