Parliament approves amendment to PSM Act

Parliament of Maldives has passed the amendment proposed to Public Service Media Act, to decrease the number of members on the governing board of Public Service Media (PSM) and to give the Privatisation and Corporatisation Board (PCB) of the Maldives, the authority to appoint members to the governing board of PSM.

The bill was passed unanimously, by parliamentarians who attended the sitting. The bill to nullify the governing board of PSM was proposed by parliamentarian Mohamed Ismail.

The bill proposes to decrease the current seven member board to five. Moreover, according to the bill, the president will be given the authority of nullifying, appointing and changing members of the governing board of PSM.

In addition, the bill also states privatisation board must finalise the board of PSM 10 days after the names are sent to the board. The parliament is responsible to appoint members to the governing board of PSM, according to PSM Act in effect. Public Service Media Act was passed in 2015 by the parliament.
