Maldives has successfully conducted the first ever bypass surgery. The first ever bypass surgery in the Maldives was conducted by a team of doctors from ADK Hospital.
During a press conference held to disseminate information about the successful surgery, Managing Director of ADK Ahmed Af'aal revealed the hospital went under major preparation procedures before conducting the surgery. The bypass surgery conducted on a 55-year-old local man was completed successfully, adding it proves the trust Maldivians have on the health system of the country, Af'aal highlighted.
The nine-hour surgery was performed by Dr. Shafiu at ADK Hospital's Hassan Ibrahim Tier of Excellence in Cardiovascular Care and Theatre Complex (HITECC). The decision was made urgently depending on the critical condition of the patient which also caused some difficulties to complete the surgery, according to Dr. Shafiu.
Heart bypass surgery, or coronary artery bypass surgery, is conducted to replace damaged arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle. The surgery is done when coronary arteries become blocked or damaged.
