Elections commission rejects candidacy of Hussain Naseer

Elections Commission of the Maldives has rejected the candidacy of Hussain Naseer who has submitted a nomination to contest as an independent candidate in the upcoming presidential election. The nomination was not accepted after finding false information on the paperwork, according to elections commission. Hussain Naseer had nominated Sheikh Nasrulla Musthafa as his running mate.
With the rejection of candidacy nomination of Hussain Naseer, there are two eligible candidates competing for the presidential election. The two candidates who are approved by the electoral body are President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, who is seeking a second term in office, and opposition coalition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
Meanwhile, former Minister of Home Affairs Umar Naseer and former vice president of Local Government Authority (LGA) Shujau Hussain, despite their previous announcement to run for the presidency, have decided not to contest in the presidential election.
