Deputy leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdul Raheem Abdulla has assured President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom does not have plans to reduce or abolish any allowance given to a citizen. The deputy leader of the ruling party made the remarks following the rumors spread by the opposition, stating there is fear allowances given to elderly citizens will be abolished.
In a tweet, Abdul Raheem assured President Yameen will not abolish any allowances, but rather have plans to increase the living standards of the citizens. The president aims to increase the retirement age to enhance participation of elderly citizens in the development of Maldives, he added.
The government of Maldives has exerted major efforts to ease the living condition of elderly citizens. In this regard, the government has exceeded the allowances given to elderly citizens and other individuals in need of state care.
