Imports increase by 33% in August: Customs

Maldives Customs Service has revealed value of goods imported in August increased by 33% compared to the same month of last year.
Goods worth USD 204.4 million were imported in August 2017, whereas this year the figure was recorded at USD 265.27 million this year, according to the latest statistics. Among the top importing countries, China recorded the highest with 19% and UAE at second with 18%.
Moreover, value of goods exported in August showed a decrease of 18% to that of the same period of last year, which is a decrease from USD 20.38 million in August 2017 to USD 16.75 million in August 2018. The largest quantity of the exports was to Germany which is 20% of the total exports for the month of August.
Meanwhile, the total revenue collected through customs duty and other fees and fines showed an increase of 14% compared to that of August 2017. In this regard, over USD 18 million was collected through customs duty last month.
