The European Union has assured to continue to closely review the situation of Maldives, in line with the conclusions of the Foreign Affairs Council.
In a statement issued regarding the presidential election in the Maldives held on September 23, the European Union Foreign Affairs and Security Policy noted the high turnout of nearly 90% and the peaceful conduct of the election on polling day reflect the commitment of the Maldivian people to democracy and their expectations, once the final results are published, of an orderly transfer of power in conformity with the Maldivian Constitution.
European Union also welcomed the congratulations extended by outgoing President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and highlighted it will pave the way for a smooth transition. On conclusion, the union expressed hope to working with the future government of Maldives to further strengthen bilateral relations.
