National Archives receives no requests to destroy documents

Director General of the National Archives of Maldives Mohamed Shathir has confirmed the institution has neither received any request to destroy any state document, nor has it received complaints to that effect.

Addressing the press regarding rumours state documents are being destroyed, Mohamed Shathir said, according to the law, any official write-up, photograph, map or chart, can be destroyed only on receiving permission from the National Archives of Maldives.

The comments from the National Archives comes in the wake of concerns expressed by Mariya Ahmed Didi, the spokesperson of President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, regarding the rumoured destruction of documentation by certain ministries.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson of the President’s Office Ibrahim Muaz Ali has denied these allegations. He also urged the public to refrain from spreading rumours that might create divisions within the society.
