MDP calls authorities to take action following an alleged confession of President

Spokesperson of the President-Elect Mariya Ahmed Didi has called on relevant authorities to take necessary action following the alleged confession of Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom that the State of Emergency declared following the February 1 Supreme Court verdict, was outside legal bounds.

Referring to the outgoing president's address to Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s extraordinary national congress, Mariya noted the president confessed the State of Emergency declared following the February 1 Supreme Court verdict, was declared outside legal bounds, as there was no legal ground to do so. Therefore, she urged relevant authorities to take action, if necessary.

Addressing a press conference held in the wake of the announcement of the official result of the presidential election, Mariya announced a Transition Secretariat has been formulated by Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Former Parliament Speaker Abdulla Shahid would be heading the transition efforts who would be assisted by the Director General of Transition, which is a position filled by a civil servant, she added.
