Opposition to try and remove Maseeh as Parliament Speaker if he does not resign

The opposition coalition has said if Abdulla Maseeh does not resign as the parliament speaker, he would have to face a no confidence vote.

Speaking to media, Parliamentarian Abdulla Riyaz said the position of parliament speaker is of great importance to implement the reform process initiated by the opposition coalition. Therefore, the parliamentarian noted a no confidence motion would be submitted if Maseeh continues to fill the duties of parliament speaker. He said the coalition prioritises to reform the judicial sector of the country and noted the numerous efforts and supports needed from the parliament.

In the past couple of years, the opposition has twice tried and failed to pass a no confidence motion against Maseeh. However, with the recent turn of events in Maldivian politics, following the result of the presidential election, the opposition remains optimistic that Maseeh can now be ousted from the position.
