United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has stated without full cooperation among relevant institutions and security forces, ideological extremism and terrorism cannot be annihilated from a small island nation such as Maldives. The statement was made at the consultative session on preventing and countering violent extremism and gender mainstreaming in the criminal justice response to terrorism, held jointly by the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) and UNODC.
Facilitator at the workshop Hidemi Yuki praised efforts by the Maldives to annihilate terrorism. Shedding light on joint efforts by NCTC and UNODC against ideological extremism and terrorism, Yuki stressed on the importance of taking precautionary measures at a time when attacks have been directed at neighbouring countries such as Indonesia and Bangladesh. For a small island nation like Maldives, this would require full cooperation among relevant institutions and security forces, noted Yuki.
The two-day workshop is attended by representatives from government institutions and non-governmental organisations.
