MDA to decide parliament majority

Maldives Democratic Alliance (MDA) has got the power to choose the majority of the parliament as the number of parliamentarians in ruling Progressive Party (PPM) and the opposition coalition is equal.

PPM currently holds 34 seats excluding the speaker of parliament, while the opposition coalition also holds 34 seats after the Supreme Court of Maldives reinstated 4 parliamentarians. Even though parliamentarians Gasim Ibrahim and Ahmed Faris Maumoon were released on bail, it is unsure whether they can attend the parliament sittings. Therefore, the 5 parliamentarians representing MDA hold the seats to decide the majority of parliament.

MDA has been closely working with PPM in the past few years but chose not to officially back the presidential candidate of PPM in the recent presidential election.
