Former Speaker of Parliament Abdulla Shahid has announced his imminent retirement from parliament. Abdulla Shahid, who is currently serving as the Chairman of Transition made the announcement at a press conference to reveal details about the transition processes.
The veteran parliamentarian said his decision comes with the knowledge of the sorry state of affairs in the Maldivian parliament at the moment, including the questions raised about the validity of some members. Shahid said he would resign from parliament once President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih takes oath of office. The former parliament speaker assured despite his resignation from parliament, he would continue to serve the country in some capacity under the new government.
One of the longest serving members of parliament, Abdulla Shahid was first elected in 1995; the same year in which President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was first elected to parliament as well.
