Spokesperson of President-Elect Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated the penalty for destroying evidence of corruption must be harsher than now.
In a tweet, the spokesperson expressed due to the increased amount of corruption in Maldives, the penalty for destroying evidence must be reviewed. As an example, noting that in UK, the penalty for trade of stolen goods is greater than that of theft, Mariya highlighted it has decreased theft cases in the country.
She made the comments in the wake of rumours spread stating Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is destroying evidence after spending large sums from the company’s coffers for the campaign activities to re-elect President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom for a second term in office.
