Elections Commission to review Maumoon's expulsion from PPM

President of the Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef has stated the electoral body has decided to review the procedure through which former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom was expelled from Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).

Responding to a question posed by the press regarding the leadership of PPM, Ahmed Shareef said as the commission has decided not to endorse the PPM Extraordinary Congress, the decisions made during the Congress would not be accepted. The commission has decided to review the procedure through which former President Maumoon was expelled from PPM as upon his request on Thursday, added Shareef.

However, the commission maintained it would not respond to the requests by PPM on any matter before the Civil Court deliberates on the questions raised regarding the leadership of the ruling party. Shareef said this includes all communications such as matters related to releasing funds to the party and responding to the party's request to expel certain members from the party.

The President of the electoral also stated PPM would be fined USD 4,854 for refusing to adhere to instructions by the Elections Commission.
