Prospective introduction of new constituencies to be confirmed next week

Elections Commission has revealed the prospective introduction of new constituencies for the 2019 Parliamentary Elections would be confirmed next week.

Addressing a press conference, President of the Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef said efforts are now underway to prepare for the parliamentary elections. Ahmed Shareef said work on finalising the constituencies are being carried out at the preliminary stage and discussions are underway with political parties on the new constituencies that could be added in Male' city.

Refuting rumours the commission has confirmed the addition of two new constituencies for the upcoming polls, Shareef said the commission had spoken about the eventuality and thereby are holding discussions with stakeholders to that effect. The commission would confirm and announce the final decision next week, he stated.

At the press conference, the commission refused to comment on the validity of the 12 disputed seats at parliament, citing that it was an ongoing case at the Supreme Court. Although the parliamentary term is nearing its end, the electoral body is yet to officially announce the parliamentary elections.
