Supreme Court verdict endorses validity of election, integrity of Elections Commission

President of the Elections Commission Ahmed Shareef has stated the Supreme Court verdict has assured citizens of the validity of the 2018 Presidential Election and the integrity of the institution.

Addressing a press conference, Ahmed Shareef noted although the validity and fairness of the presidential election was endorsed by relevant local institutions in addition to local and international observers, it is the Supreme Court verdict that has assured the citizens of the validity of the election and the integrity of the institution and its members. The head of the electoral body added thereby, the verdict brought contentment to the Elections Commission as the country's supreme authority endorsed the claims of the election officials.

Responding to questions whether ruling Progressive Party of Maldives had approached the commission in efforts to tamper with the electoral process, Ahmed Shareef reiterated the commission had not allowed any party to influence the process via vigilant adherence to the law and regulations.

Shareef said although he cannot ascertain whether the ruling party or the opposition coalition attempted to influence the process, he can assure citizens the commission made arrangements to ensure that no such influence could infiltrate the process. The commission would remain steadfast in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities, according to Shareef.
